ANTH 398D Selected Topics in Anthropology: Ethnomusicology

Presentation

A custom-built course, "created from scratch." It was the first course I taught at Concordia and it hadn't been taught before. I built it around the notion that it would in effect cover diverse anthropological dimensions of music, regardless of traditional connections with ethnomusicology as a discipline. The course has changed significantly through the three semesters that I have been able to teach it.

Teaching Format

  • Extensive seminar-style discussions
  • Some in-class lecturing
  • Limited online participation (Moodle)

Readings

Customized coursepack.

Main Assignment Type

Semester-long individual project in three parts based on the anthropological study of a musical phenomenon.
